Teeth whitening has become increasingly popular, and providing it is prescribed by a dental practitioner, it is a safe, non-invasive and effective treatment to quickly revive and bring back the sparkle to your smile. As we get older, our teeth naturally become darker and are susceptible to staining, especially if we regularly consume tea, coffee, red wine or smoke. This all adds to the ageing process which teeth whitening can rapidly help to visually reverse.
At ConfiDental Clinic, we offer a home teeth whitening system. This involves taking impressions of your teeth so that custom made trays can be constructed. These trays resemble very thin, clear gum shields which you can comfortably wear either awake or whilst sleeping. Once your trays are ready to collect, you will see your dentist for a brief appointment so they can check the trays are well-fitting and provide you with the whitening gel. You are then free to carry out the whitening at your own leisure. We recommend you wear the trays, with the gel for around 4 hours a day over a period of 2 weeks. However, the main advantage of the home whitening system is that you are in control. You can stop sooner or continue longer until you reach your desired shade. You can also top up at any time making this system more cost effective than the in-office whitening system. Your dentist will advise you to return for a review appointment around two weeks after you begin whitening so they can check the progress.
You should note that only tooth enamel can whiten with teeth whitening treatment. If you have visible fillings, veneers or crowns, these may need to be replaced following whitening treatment to match your new tooth shade. This is why many patients opt for teeth whitening before embarking upon restorative treatments. You will also need to check that your whitening trays still fit you following any restorative treatment as it is important that the trays fit snuggly to ensure an excellent result. Your cosmetic dentist at ConfiDental Clinic will be happy to advise you and discuss your options during your check up or free consultation.
