Some patients can experience feelings of fear and anxiety when visiting the dentist and occasionally these feelings can be so severe that they will delay or avert necessary dental treatment. At ConfiDental Clinic, we understand and empathise with patients who suffer from dental phobias and can offer dental treatment under sedation which enables very nervous patients to undergo dental treatment without fear.
Intravenous (IV) sedation is administered with an injection in the arm which makes you feel very sleepy and relaxed. Although you will feel sleepy, the sedative will not induce sleep so you will remain conscious throughout your appointment, be aware of your surroundings and most importantly feel calm. Often patients will not remember the procedure once the sedation wears off. This is because the drugs can produce temporary amnesia whilst under the effects of sedation.
The full effects of IV sedation can take around 24 hours to fully leave your system. For at least the the first 12 hours you will have to be accompanied by a responsible adult, who will need to attend the dental practice with you and escort you home. There are also certain procedures you should not carry out such as driving a vehicle, operate machinery, cook or use electrical utensils etc. Your dentist will clearly explain all aftercare to you during your consultation appointment and provide literature prior to your procedure under sedation so you and your chaperone will be fully aware and understand your restrictions during this time.
If you are in need of dental treatment for oral health purposes or want to have cosmetic treatment to improve the aesthetics of your teeth but are too afraid, then you could benefit having dental treatment under sedation.
Your dental practitioner at ConfiDental Clinic, can provide further advice and information on IV sedation. Please contact our reception team who will be happy to arrange your consultation.
