One of the main barriers for people when it comes to having their teeth straightened, is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the thought of having a mouth full of metal braces. There is no getting away from the fact that, even with modern braces in this style, it really isn’t the most attractive look.

It is perhaps for this reason that many of us avoided having braces as teenagers, and, consequently have been left, as adults, with teeth that are crooked and uneven. What is Invisalign?

Unlike most orthodontics, Invisalign uses a new revolutionary system to straighten your teeth. Whilst most modern cosmetic braces still use a wire and brackets system, albeit using much finer and discreet materials, Invisalign avoids the use of these altogether.

Instead, the dentist will take a series of scans and impressions, and, from these, a number of individual transparent ‘trays’ are produced which fit directly over the teeth. Each of these is designed to move the teeth progressively towards their desired position until the patient has even teeth.

Advantages

There are a number of advantages that this system has over others and which accounts for much of its popularity with dentists and patients alike.

• Discretion – One of the main reasons that people choose this method. The trays are made from a medical grade transparent plastic and, once fitted over the teeth are almost entirely unnoticeable. This helps people to go about their everyday life with greater confidence.
• Hygienic –  Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is designed to be removed by the wearer when eating food and when cleaning the teeth. This means that any risk of trapped food, which can occur when wires are worn, is eliminated almost entirely, and as cleaning is easier, the risk of dental decay is greatly reduced.
• Comfort – As of these trays are custom made for each patient, from personal scans and impressions, most patients report that, after the initial day few days, they hardly notice that they are wearing them at all.
• Convenience – As mentioned earlier, Invisalign braces are designed to be removed when eating and for cleaning. This is of great benefit especially to anyone who enjoys socialising. Because the trays can be discreetly removed before your meal, there are no concerns about whether or not you can eat something, or whether food will get stuck in the braces, potentially causing embarrassment.
